UGC Check

Before you pay even ₹1 in admission fees, verify the university is genuinely UGC-entitled. This single check can save you from a fake degree that employers will reject.

Why UGC entitlement matters

UGC (University Grants Commission) is India's central regulatory body for higher education. A university that is "UGC-entitled" means its degrees are officially recognised by the government — valid for government jobs, higher studies, and most private employers.

Hundreds of fake or unrecognised institutions operate in India. Their degrees look real but are legally worthless.

Step-by-step verification

Step 1 — Check the UGC approved list
Go to ugc.ac.in → click "University" → search by state or name. If the university appears here, it is a recognised institution.
Step 2 — For Online / Distance programmes, check the DEB list
Visit deb.ugc.ac.in — the Distance Education Bureau's portal. Search for your university AND your specific course. Both must be listed and approved.
Step 3 — Check NAAC accreditation
Visit naac.gov.in and search the university. A NAAC grade of A or above is a strong quality indicator.
Step 4 — Verify AICTE approval (for technical courses)
For MBA, MCA, B.Tech and similar programmes, also check aicte-india.org. AICTE approval is mandatory for many technical degrees.
Step 5 — Call the university's registrar office
Ask directly: "Is this programme listed with UGC DEB?" Note the name and designation of who you spoke to.

Red flags to watch for

  • University not found on ugc.ac.in or deb.ugc.ac.in
  • No physical address or campus photos available
  • Admission process has no entrance test and accepts everyone instantly
  • Fees are unusually low (e.g. full MBA for ₹5,000)
  • Degree offered in less than the standard programme duration
  • Agent pressures you to pay "before the deadline" within hours
