First Job After Graduation

Landing your first job isn't random — it's a process. Here's a realistic 90-day plan used by Sigmaroutes Learning placement mentors with thousands of graduates.

The 90-day plan

Days 1–30 — Foundation

Build your resume & LinkedIn profile

  • Use a clean 1-page resume. No photos, no borders, no "Objective" paragraph
  • Lead with education, then projects, then skills — not the other way around
  • Quantify everything you can: "managed 3 interns" not "managed a team"
  • LinkedIn: same as resume but add a professional headshot and 3-line headline
  • Connect with 5 new people in your target industry every week
Days 31–60 — Skills & Applications

Fill your skills gap & apply with focus

  • Pick one free certification from Google, HubSpot, or NPTEL relevant to your field
  • Apply to 5 jobs per day — not 50. Tailored applications outperform spray-and-pray
  • Target companies 2 tiers below your dream company first to build interview confidence
  • Use Naukri, LinkedIn Jobs, Internshala, and Foundit (formerly Monster)
  • Follow up on applications after 5 business days with a short email
Days 61–90 — Interview Prep & Offers

Prepare for interviews & negotiate

  • Prepare answers for the 20 most common interview questions using the STAR format
  • Do 3 mock interviews — record yourself, watch it back once
  • Research each company before every interview: recent news, their products, competitors
  • Don't accept or reject a verbal offer on the spot. Ask: "Can I have this in writing by [date]?"
  • Negotiate salary — even freshers can negotiate. Most companies have a 5–10% buffer

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying without reading the JD — send only if you match 70%+ of the requirements
  • Using a generic resume for every job — tweak the top 3 bullet points to mirror the role
  • Disappearing after interviews — send a thank-you email within 24 hours
  • Waiting for the perfect job — your first job is a launch pad, not a destination
  • Skipping LinkedIn — 80% of Indian hiring managers check LinkedIn before calling

Highest-demand skills in 2026

  • Data analysis (Excel, SQL, Tableau)
  • Digital marketing (Google Ads, Meta Ads, SEO basics)
  • Basic coding (Python for non-tech roles, JavaScript for tech)
  • Communication & presentation (still the #1 hiring factor)
  • AI tool proficiency (ChatGPT, Gemini, Canva AI)
